Downshifting to Gear Up: The Missing Key to Nervous System Healing

"We cannot always control what happens to us, but we can modify our response. This is what creates resilience."

One of the most profound discoveries of modern neuroscience is that the brain is not fixed. Throughout our lives, our nervous system remains capable of adaptation, growth, and healing.

This capacity is known as neuroplasticity.

For decades, scientists believed that the brain became largely hardwired after childhood. We now know that our experiences continuously shape neural pathways, influence perception, and alter the body's physiological responses to stress.

The implications are enormous.

Psychological stress, adverse childhood experiences, unresolved trauma, and chronic overwhelm do not simply affect our emotions. They can reshape the nervous system itself. Experiences that feel threatening may train the brain and body to remain on high alert, long after the original threat has passed.

The result is often a nervous system that becomes increasingly rigid and reactive.

When Protection Becomes the Problem

The human nervous system is brilliantly designed to protect us.

When faced with danger, survival responses activate automatically. These responses are commonly known as fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. They are mediated through complex interactions between the autonomic nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the body's stress response networks.

In a healthy system, once safety returns, the body naturally downshifts. Heart rate slows. Breathing deepens. Muscles relax. Physiology returns to baseline.

However, when stressors are overwhelming, repeated, or experienced early in life, the nervous system may remain organized around protection rather than connection, healing, and growth.

This can manifest as:

  • Anxiety and hypervigilance
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Digestive symptoms
  • Chronic pain
  • Sensitivity to medications or supplements
  • Emotional reactivity
  • Feeling "stuck" despite doing all the right things

Many patients I see have spent years pursuing solutions through supplements, medications, specialized diets, laboratory testing, or exercise programs. While these interventions can be extremely helpful, there is often another piece of the puzzle that remains unaddressed.

The nervous system itself.

What the ACE Study Taught Us

One of the most influential studies in modern medicine was the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, conducted by Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers surveyed more than 17,000 adults regarding childhood experiences including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction.

The findings were startling.

Approximately two-thirds of participants reported at least one adverse childhood experience, and nearly 90% of those who reported one ACE reported additional experiences.

The greater the number of ACEs, the greater the risk for:

  • Depression
  • Substance abuse
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Obesity
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Shortened lifespan

The study helped illuminate something many clinicians intuitively observed: the body keeps score of our experiences.

Yet the story does not end there.

The Hope of Neuroplasticity

The same nervous system that learned protection can learn safety.

This is the promise of neuroplasticity.

Healing does not occur through force. It does not happen because we tell ourselves to relax or because we intellectually understand our past.

True nervous system healing occurs when the body repeatedly experiences safety.

Through gentle, consistent, somatic experiences, the nervous system can gradually increase its capacity, release defensive patterns, and develop greater flexibility and resilience.

This process often involves:

  • Nervous system regulation
  • Brain retraining
  • Somatic awareness
  • Breathwork
  • Interoception
  • Attachment repair
  • Incremental exposure to safety
  • Community and co-regulation

Rather than overriding symptoms, these approaches help address the underlying physiology that may be driving them.

Why I Recommend Primal Trust™

For many years, I searched for a trauma-informed, science-based nervous system program that I could confidently recommend to patients.

I wanted something that was practical, accessible, affordable, and capable of helping people build resilience at home between appointments.

I discovered Primal Trust™ through one of my patients, who experienced significant benefits from the program.

Primal Trust™ Academy and Community is an online educational platform designed to help individuals recover from chronic stress, unresolved trauma patterns, nervous system dysregulation, and many chronic health challenges that can emerge from these physiological states.

Founded by Dr. Cathleen King, DPT, the program combines:

  • Nervous system regulation
  • Brain retraining
  • Somatic healing
  • Relationship and attachment repair
  • Inner child healing
  • Community support

Their mission is simple yet profound:

"To empower people worldwide to embody inherent safety and self-regulation, discover the True Self, repattern trauma-adaptive behaviors, and experience one's primal trust in life itself."

What I appreciate most is that Primal Trust™ does not position itself as a replacement for medical care. Rather, it addresses what is often a missing piece in healing: helping the nervous system shift out of chronic protection and into greater safety and regulation.

Many patients who are plateauing, highly reactive, or struggling to tolerate treatments discover that nervous system work becomes the foundation that allows other therapies to work more effectively.

As I often explain to patients:

"Your nervous system may be stuck in a protective state that's making it harder for your body to respond to treatment. This program works specifically on that."

A Gentle Place to Begin

If you are curious about nervous system healing but feel overwhelmed by where to start, Primal Trust™ recently introduced the Daily Regulate Foundations Program.

The program offers short daily practices—just five to ten minutes per day—for forty days, helping participants gradually build the skills of nervous system regulation and self-awareness.

Small, consistent practices often create the greatest long-term change.

After all, healing is rarely about doing more.

Sometimes it begins by slowing down.

Sometimes we must downshift in order to gear up.

And in that slowing down, the nervous system discovers something it may have forgotten long ago:

Safety.

And from safety, healing becomes possible.
